Canada's changing tourism labour force
Tourism HR Canada compiled demographic profiles based on the latest tourism labour force census data released in May 2019. The results showed that a declining youth population (15-24-year-olds) means that labour shortages are on the horizon for businesses looking to expand while employing this group of workers. On the upside, those 65 and older will increase rapidly in the coming years; representing an alternative source of workers for tourism operators in Canada. Although the number of mature workers employed in tourism generally is lower than in the economy as a whole, Tourism HR Canada notes that these workers will be looking for part-time and seasonal work whether for financial reasons or to help them stay connected in retirement.
